Title: 1st XI Scorelines Saturday August 2nd
WHAT could prove to be the season’s decisive encounter in Division One saw Oxton inflict the first defeat on Didsbury and take over top place. Didsbury subsided to a poor tally of 133, Paul Sperring 37, Tom Pierson 3-8. A fine innings of 52 by Simon Stokes then saw the Wirral men home by four wickets to claim 25 vital points. This completed an important 24 hours for Oxton who had beaten Nantwich the previous evening to reach the Twenty20 Plate final.

Didsbury still look fairly safe in second place with Timperley 44 points behind in third spot after losing heavily at Poynton. After winning their previous four games, Timperley were bundled out for 124, Jamie Maltman 4-27 and Poynton knocked them off for the loss of three men, Paul Slattery 49.

Warrington regained form to beat Upton at Old Greasby Road, scoring 195-8 batting first, Andy Kirby 51. Upton batsmen struggled to 132 in reply, Rob Batey 6-48.

The situation at the foot of the table is interesting with Bramhall – last season a premier club – dragged into a four-way battle after a losing draw at Bollington, who continue to recover. Bolly (11 points) declared on 198-7, Matt Dawson 43 not out and Bramhall replied with 168-8, Nick Cantello 57 (seven points).

Bollington remain in 11th place level on points with Simon Hall’s Cheadle who looked anything but a relegation-threatened side at Christleton. Cheadle posted 205-6 with a century stand between Aussie Dan Schuppan (79) and Mark Farrell (61). Without five regulars, Christleton skipper Paul Allen opted for the safety of an eight draw points with a response of 159-6, the skipper himself contributing an unbeaten 60. Cheadle have been handicapped by the shoulder injury which has prevented Schuppan bowling for the past six weeks.

Birkenhead Park remain in the relegation mix after pocketing only nine draw points at Cheadle Hulme where they were set to top 190-6, Richard Battye 60. They got close at 188-9, Andy Gibson 90, teenager Gordon Potts taking 5-41.

Title: 1st XI Scorelines Saturday July 19th
BOTTOM team Bollington maintained their remarkable improvement upsurge with a shock eight wickets victory on the ground of First Division promotion-chasers Oxton. After losing their first nine games, then drawing three and winning for the first time the previous week against Poynton, Bollington routed Oxton – who won the toss – for 88, the medium-pace of Mohammed Ali earning him figures of 7-33. Ali has been missing with injury for most of the season. The east-Cheshire side replied with a comfortable 91-2, Martyn Knight 57 not out, to bank 25 points and reduce the deficit at the foot of the table to just 19 points.

The promotion hopes of Timperley and Poynton were set back by the cancellation of their respective fixtures at Cheadle Hulme and at home to Cheadle. The Kingsway men will also have been disappointed that they were denied a chance to move out of the bottom two.

A tight finish and win in a low scoring game against near rivals Alderley Edge on an unpredictable, slow wicket. On a damp track, Bramhall won the toss and elected to bat on what was going to be a testing track. With variable bounce, Bramhall got off to a decent start and at 46 for 1 off 11 overs were looking good. We then subsided to 77 for 6 with some not very bright batting including too many aerial shots when the requirement was to eliminate risk. Tim Wood and Ben Milligan brought about a recovery with an intelligent approach before Tim was out for 20 and Ben last man for 30. Final score 149 ao off 43 overs.

With the wicket drying out, batting was easier but Matt Clarke and Dave Tanner bowled a decent line and Dave got just reward with 2 early wickets. Next move was to get 2 of the spinners on and Joe HJ and Ben Milligan bowled 34 overs in tandem making life very difficult for the batsmen. Wickets fell fairly regularly but with only 3 an over required, the finish was always going to be tight. The 10th wicket fell with 3 balls to go and the score on 141 for a deserved victory - the difference in the score down to runs saved from excellent fielding across the team and Tim Wood in particular. Joe HJ finished with 4 for 28 off 17 and Ben 4 for 48 off 17.

With 9 players 19 or under, this was a good test under pressure which we Bramhall just about came through. But we will need to bat better next week against Congleton who we are 10 pts behind on the same number of games.

Title: Sam Drury Debut Ton
A debut ton for Sam Drury

The Old Geezer is very aware of the fine line that exists between being in form and out of form. Sometimes the tell tale signs of a lack of confidence can be seen in the way the batsman walks to the crease; shoulders slumped and head down. At other times the give away sign is in the comments made by the batsman as they prepare for their innings. In Sam Drury’s case it was the latter yesterday. At being told he would be batting at No 3 against a strong Liverpool touring side he suggested that he had been struggling a little because of limited opportunities. He had some how convinced himself that disaster would befall him regardless of his own form and the standard of the opposition.

Sometimes good batsmen need a little bit of luck to get going and Sam got his share when he tried to turn a ball to leg early on to find it stopping on him. He had hit through too early and the ball spooned up to the fielder at square leg. To say it was an easy chance is an understatement but the big advantage for Sam was that it seemed to take rather a long time to fall towards the fielder. Fortunately for Sam, he dropped it.

What followed was a graceful and elegant innings. Pushing singles to keep the score moving he often square cut strongly or pulled. Eleven boundaries and no further chances took Sam to his first ton. He looked a little bewildered at the achievement. It was one of those ’I never thought I could do that!’ sort of occasions. In his usual way Sam walked back to the pavilion (PAGB instructing him to retire to give others a chance) in a humble, polite and unassuming way. He took the applause raising his bat for a second or two and then sat quietly.

The Old Geezer hopes he was reflecting on a wonderful innings, played by a player who is a credit to his club and family. It won\'t be his last ton. Perhaps Sam believes he can bat better than most now!

Title: Double Century Opening Partnership
Yesterday\'s rain affected 3rd X1 league game at Timperley saw Iain Tittle and James Duke hit an unbroken 1st wkt partnership of 224 off 42 overs, with Titts hitting 120 and Dukey 80. After a careful start on a tricky wicket, they moved up the gears and it was a pleasure to watch. After heavy rain, Timperley worked hard to get the ground fit to play and they finished on 206 for 9 which meant 17 pts for Bramhall, Tom Drury picking up 7 for 52 on the same day that Sam Drury notched his first ton in the Sunday friendly game - well done Sam.

Going into this match at the halfway point of the season, Bramhall 3rds are placed 3rd with a game in hand on Congleton and bowdon but with Alderley and Hyde both having a game in hand on Bramhall. It looks to be between these 5 teams for the top 2 places. Bramhall have been steady rather than spectacular first half of the season and we will need to step up our performances against the top teams in particular. Mr Tittle departs for sunny climes so time for the rest of us to get some runs.

Title: First team sruggle against high flying Oxton
First team sruggle against high flying Oxton

Oxton stay second 18 points behind after beating Bramhall by six wickets at Townfield Lane.  Nick Atherton top-scored with 51 in Bramhall’s below par 120, Tom Pearson 4-33, Chandra Atram 4-37. Oxton struggled against Andy Hayes’ accurate 4-38 before passing the winning post winning at 126-6, Mark Rowland 35.

Poynton are becoming a force to be reckoned with in Division One, three wins and two draws in their last five games hoisting them up to a challenging third place. They almost made it four wins at home to Christleton, reducing their visitors to 108-9 (Iroshan de Silva 52, Jamie Maltman 3-23, Derwen Thompson 3-30) after they had declared at 171-5. Nafees Din top-scored with 63 and Paul Gould 46, while de Silva took 3-38 in a rain-reduced game.

At the top, Didsbury registered win number seven by six wickets at Birkenhead Park after the Wirralians had taken up their full 55 overs to post 179-8, Ian Platt 69 not out, Peter Manser 5-42.  Paul Sperring had an unbeaten 52 for Didsbury who made it with two overs to spare.

Didsbury need Clubmark for promotion

It was confirmed at the league’s July management committee that Didsbury do not yet have Clubmark and if they don’t  attain the accreditation by the end of September they will not be promoted.   This would mean only one club promoted to and one relegated from the premier league.

Timperley won by one wicket with two balls left in a tense and evenly-balanced game at Upton who scored 156 batting first, David Warburton 36, Ryan Edwards 3-40, Chris Reid 3-54.  Timperley just made it at 157-9 (Gary Dixon 4-26), while Reid scored a match-winning 51 not out on debut after being transferred from Alderley Edge.

After losing their first nine games, Bollington drew for the third week in a row, for the first tie recording more (15-12) than hosts Warrington.  With 75 from Rick Hough, Bolly totalled 226, Steve Heydon 5-50 and Warrington replying with 224-6. Liam Heaphy 77 not out, Chris Kirby 55, Abdul Aqueel 4-106.

Cheadle Hulme won by four wickets off the last ball against struggling Cheadle at Grove Park. Cheadle took 55 overs to compile 173-8, Steven Hall 60, Simon Hall 37, Tod McDonald 3-45.  Cheadle Hulme then scraped home at 177-6 of the final ball of the 45th over, Richard Battye 81 not out.  Interestingly, Cheadle Hulme fielded proud father John Potts and his two sons Ollie and Jordan

Title: A report from Poynton CC website about the 1st team match

Andy Hall\'s team grateful to Matt Dawson

The 23rd century of his remarkable career by veteran campaigner Brian Kingham lit up a gloomy Poynton afternoon. And it was the weather that had the final say as the umpires took the players off with three overs remaining, denying Poynton the chance to grab the two wickets they required for victory.

In producing the teams highest total of the year, Poynton’s batsmen were into their stride early, punishing some variable length bowling.

Damian Stringer (27) batted well in adding 61 for the second wicket with Kingham, but the best batting came in the 112 partnership between Kingham and Nafees Din. Kingham cut and pulled superbly, and after a slow start Din’s trademark straight drives were soon in evidence on his way to his first Poynton half century.

Kingham finally fell for 106, made in 133 balls with 14 fours, having led his side to a formidable total.

Even with Bramhall reduced to 38-4, Poynton were counting no chickens, as this brought together Cheshire captain Andrew Hall, one of the country\'s finest batsmen outside of the first-class game, and county wicketkeeper Matt Dawson. But for long periods, Hall struggled, unable to make contact with many prodigious swinging deliveries from Simon Turner.

Hall fell to Jamie Maltman for 32, ending Bramhall\'s victory hopes, but despite claiming other wickets, Poynton were unable to dislodge Dawson, who occupied the crease for 32 overs for a dogged 61 not out. Derwin Thompson returned the best figures with 4-35.

Title: Halls team back to winning ways
Timperley’s winning run ended at Bramhall where they lost a tight game by 12 runs after the home side had posted 218, Danny Humphreys 51, Ross Edwards 5-51.  In-form left-hander Tom Twiney (dropped at nought and four) nearly pulled it off with a fine 97 for Timperley aided by Mark Maddocks 37. But the match-winner Simon Wilkinson pulled it off with a 7-47 spell, his third return of six wickets or more.

After holding third-placed Upton to 166-9, Adrian Hughes 53, Nick Anderson 3-35, Didsbury won comfortably at 168-3 with seven overs to spare, G. Narayanan, 63 and Paul Sperring 51 winding up with a  century stand.

Oxton had to answer to the accuracy and away swing of Simon Turner at Poynton where they were inserted and held to 153-9 in 55 overs. Turner took 7-36, but couldn’t get rid of Oxton’s last pair N. Subardhar 34 and skipper Andy Birley 25, who put on 58 for the 10th wicket.  Even so, Poynton went on to win well at 154-6, Paul Gould 40, Chris Stenhouse a fiery 4-76.

Christleton’s Sri Lankan batsman Iroshan de Silva cracked a good-looking 124not out with Rick Moore contributing 53 to their side’s declared tally of 238-1 at Warrington.  The Walton Lea men limped to 167-9 in reply, Dane Hutchison 37.

Cheadle Hulme inflicted Bollington’s ninth successive defeat at Grove Park, after declaring on 190-3 in 46 overs, David Hawes 48.  Wicket-keeper Ged McKiernam top-scored with 35 as Bolly put up a stirring fight before being bowled out in the 50th over for 152, Ewan McCray 5-52.

Birkenhead
Park exchanged places in the bottom two with Cheadle thanks to a four wickets home win. Zia ur Rehman’s leg-spin claimed 4-42 as Cheadle were dismissed for 157, Greg Dixon 41, a tally which Park overhauled for the loss of six batsmen, Andy Gibson leading the way with a solid 44.

Park have suffered a blow with the loss of recently-arrived Indian Cricket League all-rounder Ganapathi Vignesh, who has returned home due to the illness of his mother, according to the club’s website.

Title: Bramhall outplayed at Warrington

Wins for top four in First Division

THE top four teams (Oxton, Didsbury, Upton and Warrington) all scored victories on a day when there were no draws in the First Division.

Warrington recovered after their horror show at Cheadle Hulme to outplay Bramhall at Walton Lea.  With 3-40 from, Rob Batey, Bramhall mustered only 97, then Mal Agar’s 54 saw Warrington over the line by seven wickets.

Oxton did not have it all their own way in the Wirral derby with Birkenhead Park at
Townfield Lane
. After restricting their hosts to 182-9, Chris Davies 35, Mark Rowlands 31, Ganapathi Vignesh 4-36, Park fought hard and with an unbeaten 83 from Zia ur Rehman they got to within 20 runs, at 162.  The difference between the teams proved to be Andy Birley’s sharp pace bowling which earned him a 6-45 return.

Didsbury stay on Oxton’s tail just two points behind after a 75 runs victory at nearby Cheadle.  C. Morgan was unbeaten with 83 and Marcus Fisher with 53 in Didsbury’s 208-2 declared off 49 overs. Cheadle batted 49 overs for 133, Stuart Stoneman proving the match winner with 5-37.

Upton’s fifth win was by five wickets at Christleton, whose Little Heath ground improves with every passing season.  Batsmen from both sides struggled on a near-perfect pitch on which Christleton were bowled out for 151 (Nick Moore 37), Gary Dixon bowling unchanged (downhill) with 4-62.  Paul Allen made Upton fight hard for their runs and he, too bowled unchanged down the slope and deserved better figures than 2-65 off 24 overs. Aussie Adam Watson top-scored with 43 to help steer his side to a 25 points return.

Timperley’s fourth successive win was by five wickets at the expense of luckless Bollington, who have now lost all eight. Calum Rowe contributed 53 to Bolly’s 105, Ryan Edwards 5-15 to which Timperley replied with 106-5, Mark Leathley 61 not out.  For Bolly, Mo Ali had taken 3-7 off 4.1 overs when injury forced him off.

Simon Turner’s fine 6-31 skittled Cheadle Hulme for 94 at London Road, only Richard Battye (31 not out) standing firm.  Brian Kingham had 49 in Poynton’s reply of 97-3.

Title: Under 13s Advance into The Championship Division
The Under 13’s with an unbeaten divisional record of 5 wins and 3 abandoned games topped Zone 3 and now go into the Championship Division with the winners and runners up from the other zones.

The team has great strength in depth and all the players have contributed to the team\'s success. This was illustrated on Sunday when chasing a modest total of 103 against Timperley Bramhall crashed to 30 for 6 but a determined 30 from Tom Duffy and an excellent partnership between Dan Rothel and Tom Morton ensured the team won with 1 ball remaining.

Victories in the Cheshire Cup against 2 very strong teams — Hyde and Didsbury have been marred by the Didsbury game being played after the required date and the team unfortunately having to forfeit their place in the quarter final.

In the second half of the season the team will have to play to their maximum potential in order to compete aginst the best junior teams in the League.

Title: Another victory for Andy Halls side
With many players still celebrating Stockport County’s Wembley promotion victory, Bramhall beat Cheadle by 22 runs at
Church Lane
. Bramhall posted 178, Andy Hall 58, Chris Brady 5-56, Dan Schuppan 4-45 and Cheadle reached 156, the outstanding Schuppan 55. Simon Wilkinson kept up his fine off-spinning spell with 5-70.

Birkenhead
Park got off the mark thanks to a fine all-round performance from their late-arriving Indian Cricket League all-rounder Ganapathi Vignesh from Chennai.  He took 4-27 in Poynton’s modest 121, then hit an unbeaten 67 as Park went on to win by two wickets.

Cheadle Hulme beat a strangely under-power Warrington at Grove Park after their visitors had struggled to post 121-9 in the full 55 overs allowance, Chris Kirby 28. Spinners Ewan McCray took 5-37 and Chris Maudsley 4-13 employed a stranglehold. Cheadle Hulme went on to post 114-2 in 27 overs, Adam Wilde 58 not out.

Upton
came a seven wickets cropper at home to Wirral neighbours Oxton who stay top by three points. Only Adrian Hughes (52) put bat to ball for Upton, Andy Birley took 4-22, but was not helped by five catches dropped off his bowling. Oxton replied with a convincing 133-3, Simon Stokes 62.

Christleton lost a low-scoring game by five runs at Timperley after the home side had been bowled out for 152, Paul Allen 4-50.  Christleton fell just short at 147, despite good batting from the de Silva brothers Iroshan (59) and Suresh (48). Mark Leathley took 3-17.

Bollington sank to their seventh successive defeat at Didsbury, who by contrast, are making a strong promotion bid. Didsbury declared on 182-4, Marcus Fisher 69, Paul Sperring 69 not out before Bolly were sent back for 72, Nick Anderson 4-17, Stuart Stoneman 4-35.

Title: The Old Geezer is not a jogger, is he?

The Old Geezer decided last season to draw a close to his memorable career (it is to him) in league cricket. He had been a fairly regular member of the 3rd team as they secured the league championship last season. He felt it was a good time to throw his very large jockstrap away and place his cherished bat in the loft. He began to concentrate on jogging as a way of keeping relatively fit. It meant he could eat and drink at the usual rate without putting on the extra pounds. Four broken toes and a calf strain restricted his running during the early part of the year but he felt in mid May as if he had become more interested in running than cricket.

Last week The Old Geezer received a call to say that many juniors were unavailable due to exams at school and university. Could he be tempted to play competitively just one more time?

As The Old Geezer drove up to
Church Lane
the wind was blowing a gale but it was dry. It quickly became clear that the club selectors had decided that the youth policy was going to fall by the wayside this week. It was time for the old guard to ‘come to the party!’ The Old Geezer had never been sure where the party was and why he always seemed to miss it but the fun started when Laws was nearly locked in the Umpires’ room. It was felt this was a suitable place of solitude for an ageing player to prepare his well honed body for the onslaught ahead. PAGB was captain so short one liners started to spray the changing room. Most of them generally centred round the various times when he had tricked Laws into playing or managed to get him stuck in the umpires’ room. Old tricks die hard. Laws was ready by the way. He always changes in the umpires’ room with the door open. A nasty image flashed through The Old Geezer’s mind but it quickly faded away just like Bramhall’s top order.

The toss was meaningless because Cheadle had only 8 fit players. They bat and we bowl pretty badly. Things don’t go well from the start with Bailey retreating to the pavilion clutching a muscle. For the next 40 or so overs Bramhall chase the ball, drop catches, including a virtually impossible one (not really) by The Old Geezer himself and end up cursing the luck of a young middle order player who manages to direct the ball away from our fielders all afternoon. If it was a Bramhall player we would now be promoting him to the 1st team but The Old Geezer knows there is no malice in our player’s comments. It’s just jealousy. They score over 240 and The Old Geezer together with ¾ of the Bramhall side stumble into the pavilion for some Bovril. It was pretty cold and Wyn was just warming his toes in front of the electric heater when the captain asked him to open the batting. A small speck of pasty hit my cheek as he blurted out ‘Are you sure skip?’

Bramhall opened their innings with experience and relative youthfulness. After the fall of these two wickets there were only two youthful players left so you would have thought that the assured hand of experience would have come to fore. Players would have calculated the runs required per over, played straight, made the 8 fielders scuttle around trying to fill the many gaps in the field. It’s just not Bramhall’s style it is? Why play like United when you can scrape home like Fulham and have a great laugh at the same time? As wickets fell it became clear that the side was going to have to rely (again) on Bailey with his dodgy muscle and PAGB (again) with his dodgy body to stave off defeat. With 80 or so needed and the last pair at the crease neither of them able to complete a single let alone a quick single a victory looked unlikely.

Bramhall players became more interested in Nick Daber’s CB radio and his desire to be a pilot and his attempts to get an electrician to sort out the showers than the actual game. But slowly (because that’s the way PAGB runs these days) the score started to get closer and closer. With 30 needed and 4 overs left it was now the turn of Cheadle to start looking frenzied. Surely the one legged Bailey and the weak kneed PAGB weren’t going to pull this one off were they?

They were not but they didn’t give their wicket away so a very close draw was the result. The Old Geezer reflected on a very tight game. Surely the points would be shared? He was shocked to find out that Cheadle gained nearly 10 more points because they batted first and achieved a winning draw. Huh!

As The Old Geezer threw his kit into his car for what might be the last time he thought of his fun day, the good laughs and the hope that the selectors might just ask him to play one more time.

Magic shots of the day:
1. Max Hornby square driving for four
2. \'Diamond Dave\' middling a delivery ..............only for a fielder to take the catch of the season.

Most encouraging performance: Max Hornby for keeping the middle order together and playing some short pitched deliveries really well. Played an exquisite square cut.

Worst shot of the day: Perm 5 from 6

Title: Bramhall 1st X1 v Hawk Green (Cheshire Cup)
Sunday saw Bramhall record back to back victories for the Weekend in style, as a (correct me if I’m wrong) record victory for the club of a staggering 257 run margin was achieved against Hawk Green.

Albert had no hesitation in batting on the same wicket that brought us success the day before, and the two Nick’s again got off to a solid start.

When Athers fell for 18 the carnage really began, with Cantello and Albert launching themselves into the opposition attack.

A flurry of 4’s and 6’s kept the scorers and umpire’s busy, and the score had reached 250 before Albert was dismissed for a fine 80, with 12 overs still remaining.

Dan Humphreys joined Nick at the crease and carried on where Albert left off, finishing with his second unbeaten 50 so far in his debut season.

The plaudits, however, must again go to Nick Cantello, who despite a heavy night of celebrating his forthcoming trip to Wembley, batted all the way through for a magnificent 168* - his highest ever score.

The final total of 360 was an unbelievable effort and Hawk Green never really looked capable of chasing the runs.

Eventually the opposition were bowled out for 103, with Wilkinson and Hayes picking up 3 wickets a piece along the way.

All in all a fantastic weekend, and a promising return to form ahead of some crucial matches, starting away at Upton next Saturday.

Highlight of the day: There were several batting highlights, including some massive sixes and of course Nick’s huge score, but also some good moments in the field. These included a stunning one handed catch from the Hog and also an athletic running and sliding catch on the boundary by Cantello.

Meatball moment: After Jack Marshall had ‘bounced’ a tail ender and hit him on the head, the resulting sledge from the batsman left several supporters in stitches. Unfortunately it is not quite politically correct enough to repeat here!

Title: Bramhall 1st X1 v Bollington (h)
The first senior team game at
Church Lane
in 2008 brought a maiden league victory for the season after the late wobble at Cheadle Hulme the week before.

After midday drizzle had delayed the start of the game and reduced the available overs to 84, the Bollington skipper opted to bat first on winning the toss.

Tight bowling from Wilkinson, Hurlston and Hayes kept the opposition down to around 2 an over for the first hour or two, although wickets were proving harder to come by.

The opposition then began to make good use of the excellent batting conditions and were able to accelerate the scoring dramatically, eventually closing on 162 from a maximum 46 overs.

Despite a stiff target of over 4 an over, the Bramhall batsmen were up to the challenge and after a circumspect start, Cantello and Atherton got going.

The dismissal of Atherton for 24 brought the skipper to the crease, and Albert and Nick then flayed the bowling to all parts in another big stand between the two.

Unfortunately neither batsman could see the job through, with Nick top scoring with 80. His nerves must have been shredded with the knowledge that Stockport County were desperately clinging on to a 1-0 lead down the road at Edgeley Park.

Thankfully there was no wobble from the middle order this week, as Dan Humphreys and Matt “the finisher” Dawson saw us home with an over and a half to spare.

A 25 point haul will hopefully give us some momentum as we begin our promotion push after a slow start.

One particularly promising sign is the state of the ground, which has improved significantly since the opening weeks of the season and the problems with blocked drainage. Credit must go to Richard Cragg and his staff for sterling work in the past few weeks.

Highlight of the day: Nick Cantello’s reaction to the final whistle going in the Stockport game before cracking open the Champagne!

Meatball moment: Daws managing to offend Badger’s 18 year old girlfriend by telling her that she could pass for 30!

Title: Club Kit
Thankyou to all those that have ordered kit so far. The bulk order went to Peak Sports / Monkhouses a couple of weeks ago, so unfortunately I cannot take any more orders at this time.

However, once this order has been received, everyone will be able to order directly from the manufacturer. Once prices and details have been confirmed I will post a new note.

Thanks

Title: May 11th league game v Timperley
After winning the toss, Timperley raced to 45 off the first 5 overs before Bramhall started to peg them back. Josh Hornby on debut started nervously going for 21 in his first 2 overs but came back really well finishing with 0 for 25 off 6 overs. Clarky had his usual bad luck with a couple of missed catches and mixed a few 4 balls with some unplayable ones and ended up with 1 for 41 off 10. Tom Drury was introduced and after seeing his first 2 balls rudely hit for 4 and 6 by a very disrespectful young man, got into his groove with 3 for 50 off 16 overs and off course exacted revenge. But the star man was Terry who bowled an excellent line and deserved his return off 4 for 34 off 13 overs and apparently achieved a body temperature of 150 degrees - its the 3 jumpers Terry. Timperley finished on 170 for 8 off their 45 overs, which we were pleased with after their rapid start.

Mr Tittle looking like he is starting to find his feet at 3rd team level opened up with Peter Wood. Looking secure they progressed steadily past 50 before Peter went for 13 but a useful opening partnership at 3 an over. Viv Vaish was next in and the run rate started to pick up with Iain opening up and this pair took us into the 90’s before Viv also went for 13. With Iain at the crease, the job of the other batsman was to provide support and without looking at his best, Matt Wood kept Iain company for a useful 16 before getting out with the score on 130. By this stage Tittle had got to 89 including four lusty sixes into the short car park boundary, but having missed his usual winter training became tired (unfit) and we then lost a few quick wickets. However, 12 year old Max Hornby steered us home with aplomb and had the skipper for company in his newfound old geezer position and Bramhall won with 6 wickets down and an over in hand.

A good early win with a fight back after a difficult start in the field. On the batting front, although the juniors became frustrated at not turning their starts into bigger scores, more important, they contributed to 3 good partnerships which is what it is what we needed.

Result : Bramhall Win

Timperley    170 for 8 off 45 overs (13 points)

Bramhall      172 for 6 off 44 overs (24 points)

Title: V Chester B.H

Well we won the toss! fielded and had a much improved display. some nice spells from Ian Bailey and early overs from dorris got us of to a steady start. Unfortunatly we just took our foot off and let the game slide a little, but clawed it back towards the end of the innings! well done to all the fielders welcome back Jack Harris and Beard, Bails.

Right now the batting was another story, we had a steady start with reno and Michael Bolger and just as reyno started to look good he had the rug pulled from under him by one of 3 strange moments from their ump! Unfortunatley i\'d say we were just unlucky and the LBW calls were pretty poor, (just my opinion mind) (oh and by the way I think Wyn Harris was brilliant all day)

M.D.Bolger did get a bad one as he showed signs of his class, which brought myself and Jackie Harris to the popping crease and not for long as he, me and Muzza all followed with ducks the latter in A.Wood was not another odd call from there ump but unfortunatley the damage was already done. Dozza, Dan Holmes & Ben Milligan showed some good signs at the crease but all really were kicking themselves for their dismissals. Which left us a nice luxury of Beard and I.Bailey at 10 & 11 and they played very well stuck there for a good 10 overs until a beard was undone. To be honest we didn\'t deserve a draw it would have been daylight robbery. If we\'d have got one it would have been down to the two golden oldies. Great effort boys.

Right last week was not our best showing win the field as we all know but i was very pleased by the maked improvement in our fileding this week, really big effort from everyone. It was just our batting that let us down snd thats is something we all need to work on. Build partnerships out there and the job becomes easier. I also really think that nets are there to be used guys and this will help all of us so lets see you all down there as Mr Cragg works his socks off on that ground and we should take advantage of it, especially as its much dryer now. Well done J.R.A Cragg on another great BCC wicket.

Credit to Chester they were the better side on the day!

Title: 1st XI Scorelines Saturday April 26th
Newly-promoted Warrington have made a flying start in Division One, adding to their opening day victory against Bollington by outplaying Timperley at Walton Lea. Richard Batey claimed 5-31 as Timperley were bowled out for 121 (Tom Twiney 35), then Mal Agar’s solid 38 ensured a four wickets win, Matt Leathley 3-51.

The first divisional century came from the bat of Bramhall and Cheshire skipper Andy Hall at Birkenhead Park. He scored 104 and Nick Cantello 55 as Bramhall declared on 238-4 at half-way. Title: 1st XI Scorelines Saturday April 19th
There were some low scores in Division One, notably by newly-promoted Cheadle Hulme, who were being bowled out for 51 at Cheadle, where A. Malook took 4-4 and Dan Schuppan 3-7. Earlier Cheadle had declared on 169-8, Schuppan 53, Ewan McCray 3-47, Todd McDonald 3-50.

Timperley mustered just 92 against Upton at Stockport road, the Wirral men’s new skipper Gary Dixon taking 5-27. Upton coasted home by six wickets.

Bollington (94) also failed to top 100 at home to promoted Warrington as Aussie pair Steve Heydon took 3-19 and Dane Hutchinson 3-36. Warrington had posted 169-8, James Hughes 60, Hutchinson 42 not out. There’s going to be some confusion at Bolly this season Mo Ali no. 2 taking 4-65 and no relation Mo Ali no.1 returning 3-42.

Birkenhead Park batsmen also struggled to post 109 at Didsbury, M. Barnes 60, Paul Sperring 4-18. Nick Anderson’s unbeaten 51 and 35 not out from skipper Sperring saw Didsbury home by seven wickets after being 20-3.

Poynton captain Steve Mobley missed his first league or cup game since joining the club in 2000 at Christleton. Poynton declared on 152-9, Rick Clark 33 not out and Christleton responded with 135-9, D. Graham 44 to shade the draw points 9-8.

Bramhall v Oxton was called off at 10 a.m., groundsman Richard Cragg’s outfield failing to recover from bad weather in the first three weeks of the month. The early decision enabled Bramhall’s Nick Cantello to preserve his record of watching every Stockport County match so far this season.

BOLLINGTON (won toss, 4 pts.) lost to WARRINGTON (23 pts.) by 75 runs
Warrington 169-8 dec. (50 overs: J. Hughes 60, D, Hutchinson 42no, M. Ali No.1 4-65, M. Ali no. 2 3-42)

Title: Bramhall 2nd XI at Oxton, 19th April 2008
Bramhall 2nds got off to the perfect start at a chilly and overcast Oxton on Saturday.
After being put into bat by the hosts on a green wicket, openers Andy Reynolds and Danny Humphreys made a positive start with good running and regular boundaries, and a bit of luck as well. Humphreys began to take control of the stand and really hit the ball solidly all round the park to bring up his 50 and the 100 partnership shortly afterwards. He kept the rate of scoring up until failing to clear deep square leg and fell for a rapid 80 with the score on 121 from less than 20 overs.
Unfortunately, the top and middle order struggled to get starts on the slow wicket and the run rate ground to a halt as a succession of single figure scores followed.
When Reynolds fell for 43 in the 39th over, Bramhall were 155 for 6 and still needing runs to pickup maximum batting points after what had earlier seemed a certainty. James Day and Andy MacClelland stuck together for a few overs and helped the score along before James Davenport came in to finish the innings with some quality blows. Skipper Nick Babbage called the batsmen in at 213 for 8 off the 50 overs which looked like it would be a challenging total.

Oxton\'s openers got off to a positive start on a pitch where faster bowling was easier to play shots against, but it wasn\'t too long before Badger\'s £13k New Zealand coaching academy investment paid off inducing a catch to the lively Mike Bolger at gully. Wickets then continued to fall regularly as Badge and Davenport bowled well and the catches were held. Oxton put up some resistance after reaching 45 for 6, but with overs in hand the visitors were always ahead of the game. Ches produced a captaincy masterstroke in bringing on Doris, and it was only after somehow picking up a wicket in his 1st over that he was kept on. Doris was evidently very stiff and cold as the ball frequently found the middle of the pitch, but his golden spell continued and he wrapped up the innings as the hosts crumbled to 80 odd all out.
Doz finished with an amazing 4-4, to go with Davvo and Badger\'s 3 wickets apiece.

Although picking up 25 points, sterner tests will face Bramhall in the coming weeks and stronger batting and fielding performances will be required to pick up a solid points haul every week.

A really positive start to the Premier season for the 2s, and it is hoped that the winning run can continue at home to Nantwich next week.

Title: John North 1932 - 2008......A cricketing tribute
John died peacefully in his sleep at Southfields House Residential Home, Woodford in the early hours of Monday, March 17th, 2008.

An exemplary and high principled sportsman, a loyal servant to cricket in Cheshire, a fine and resourceful leader, an individualistic, determined character and a most welcoming, cheerful, amusing, extrovert gentleman, John Monk North graced Bramhall CC with his special presence over four decades.

His achievements were many; he it was who set up the most successful Over 40s Cheshire County League Cricket competition with the quirky idea, typical of him, of a wooden spoon for the bottom club and no cup for the winners, as for him the playing of the great game was all important, not the trophy.

Generations of Cheshire Colts cricketers recall with affection and smiles his often hilarious dressing room team talks as manager, which set all at their ease and which always emphasised that cricket should be played in the right way with respect for umpires and opponents and with the full hearted support for one’s teammates.

His enthusiastic and energetic chairmanship of Bramhall Cricket Club during its memorable 1986 Centenary Year proved inspirational with a wide range of initiatives and events. Only John could have effectively carried them through.

As a player, a product of The King\\\'s School Macclesfield, he batted combatively, cutting and pulling particularly effectively, bowled whirlwind fast in his youth and fielded with the concentration and effort of a true team man. During his career in addition to his time at Bramhall, he played for Styal where he first exhibited his captaincy ability in the 1960s, and with distinction more latterly at Woodford and Moss Hey Casuals.

Remarkably he played on into his seventies each Wednesday in his beloved Over 40s form of the game, only very reluctantly retiring when others started fearing for his safety. In classical John North style, in his late sixties after being sent to field on the boundary at BOTH ends for his own protection from fast-moving cricket balls in the previous Over 40s match, he hid a bicycle and crash helmet behind one sightscreen before the start of the next game. When he was duly sent to field at deep third man for the first over, off he obediently went and at the end of the over he disappeared behind the sightscreen to emerge seconds later helmeted up and proceeded to cycle past his bemused fellow fielders and the startled umpires to long off at the other side of the ground ready for the next over where the bike was carefully placed again behind the sightscreen; this procedure John repeated throughout the twenty over innings. Only ‘Northie’ could have got away with it!! Only he could create such fun.

The final match of last season at Bramhall’s ground and the last match of John’s life was most fittingly to celebrate his 70th birthday. Cricketing friends of his were invited to play; food was laid on; it was kept as a surprise from him. Befitting his humility and modesty, he could scarecly believe all had been organised in his honour. Needless to say a wonderful time was had by all, not least by John himself.

Perhaps his legacy for us all to reflect on should be his deep respect for and profound love of the game of cricket which showed itself in friendship and politeness to opposition and teammate alike, his idiosyncractic sense of humour which spread laughter around many cricket pavilions and his fearlessness as a leader in travelling in the directions he thought best.

We shall not see his like again; he was truly a one-off.
